Neurodiversity and School Avoidance:
A Framework for Considering Underlying Causes and Intervention

This workshop invites educators to explore knowledge and strategies that can support neurodivergent students facing school avoidance or refusal. Beginning with a deep dive into neurodiversity, the session focuses on autism and ADHD, offering a richer appreciation of how these conditions impact everyday life. This foundational understanding will then provide a stepping off point to discussion, identifying, consider and addressing the root causes underlying school refusal.

Key topics for exploration include:

  • Developing a more nuanced understanding of autism and ADHD to move beyond surface-level misconceptions.

  • Recognizing how sensory processing, executive functioning, and social dynamics shape school experiences for neurodivergent students.

  • Differentiating school avoidance rooted in neurodivergence from other underlying factors, such as trauma.

  • Exploring the *double empathy problem* as a framework for improving communication and fostering mutual understanding.

Through interactive discussions and evidence-based strategies, participants will be encouraged to:

  • Reflect on the specific barriers neurodivergent students face in school environments.

  • Consider interventions that can reduce anxiety and support emotional regulation.

  • Build stronger partnerships with families to promote consistent and collaborative support.

This workshop is designed to support educators in deepening their understanding of neurodiversity, fostering curiosity and adaptability as they create environments where staff feel more informed and neurodivergent students are more likely to feel seen, valued, and supported.
