Supporting the Mental Health of Neurodivergent
Adolescents & Teens in a School Setting
A workshop exploring how neurodivergence can shape the emotional and social experiences of adolescents, helping educators recognise often overlooked challenges and develop more responsive approaches to supporting mental health and wellbeing in school.

About the workshop
This workshop aims to deepen educators' understanding of the relationship between neurodivergence and mental health, with particular attention to the experiences of autistic adolescents and those with ADHD.
We will explore how differences in social communication, sensory processing, executive functioning and emotional regulation can influence a young person's experience of school, relationships and sense of self. Particular attention will be given to the often invisible challenges associated with neurodivergence, including masking, social exhaustion, anxiety and difficulties navigating the social and academic demands of adolescence.
The workshop will also consider how emotional distress may present differently in neurodivergent young people, and why traditional approaches to mental health support may not always address their underlying needs.
We will explore practical ways to create more understanding and supportive school environments, including recognising signs of distress, adapting communication and responding to individual needs in ways that promote emotional wellbeing and a sense of belonging.
