Autism awareness:
Building a better understanding of the child’s experience
A workshop helping educators develop a deeper understanding of autism and how differences in communication, sensory processing and social experience can shape a child's daily life, learning and wellbeing at school.

About the workshop
This workshop aims to help educators develop a deeper understanding of autism from a neurodevelopmental perspective, exploring how autistic children and young people experience the social, emotional and educational demands of school.
We will consider how differences in sensory processing, social communication, executive functioning and emotional regulation can affect learning, relationships and everyday school life. Particular attention will be given to challenging assumptions about autistic behaviour and understanding the child's perspective.
The workshop will also explore practical strategies for creating more inclusive learning environments, supporting emotional wellbeing and recognising each child's individual strengths and needs.
Who is it for?
This workshop is designed for teachers, SENDCos, teaching assistants, learning support and pastoral staff, and other professionals working with autistic children and young people in educational settings.
It can be delivered as whole-school INSET training or adapted for smaller professional groups, whether they are developing an initial understanding of autism or seeking to deepen their existing knowledge.
The workshop can also be adapted for parents and carers.
