Understanding Autism for Therapeutic Professionals

A workshop exploring how autism can shape the therapeutic relationship and process, offering professionals a deeper understanding of autistic experiences and the adaptations that can support more responsive and effective therapeutic work.

Autism and Therapy

About the workshop

This workshop offers therapeutic professionals an opportunity to deepen their understanding of autism and consider how neurodevelopmental differences may influence the therapeutic process.

Drawing particularly on psychodynamic thinking, while remaining relevant across therapeutic modalities, we will explore how differences in social communication, sensory processing, emotional regulation and executive functioning can shape a client's experience of therapy.

Particular attention will be given to the therapeutic relationship, including how differences in communication, emotional expression and interpersonal expectations may influence the development of trust, understanding and the therapeutic alliance.

We will also consider how traditional therapeutic assumptions and approaches may need to be adapted to better accommodate autistic ways of experiencing and relating to the world, supporting more responsive and effective therapeutic work.

Who is it for?

This workshop is designed for psychotherapists, counsellors, psychologists and other mental health professionals working with autistic children, adolescents or adults.

It is suitable for practitioners across therapeutic modalities, including those seeking to deepen their understanding of autism, reflect on their clinical practice and develop more neurodiversity-informed approaches to therapeutic work.
